There is so much to do when planning a wedding. From floral arrangements to bridesmaid dresses, it can all get too much. Added on top of these worries is buying your wedding cake. The cake is a vital part of the wedding. It needs to be look good and taste great. Here are some of the things that you should look out for when making your decision:

·        Fits Your Theme

A decision on what cake to purchase should only happen once you have chosen your theme. Floral arrangements, the dress, menu and venue should all be chosen first. A cake is there to compliment these elements, not shape them.

·        Set Your Budget

Before you go shopping around for cakes, set your budget. It will make the process much simpler as you can specify your budget to bakers beforehand. Remember, the bigger the cake = the bigger the budget. Multiple flavours will cost more too.

·        The Cake Should Fit Your Space

A good rule to remember is that three tiers will feed 50 to 100 people, any more than 200 will need five layers. If your reception is in a large room, consider using columns to make the cake appear bigger.

·        Remember That It’s For You

You need to select the flavours you want, not what you think everyone else will want. The cakes flavour is just as important as how good it looks. But the most important thing to remember is that it is your day, not everyone else’s.

·        Choose a Frosting

The two most common choices for wedding cake frosting is butterscotch or fondant. Butterscotch tends to be the better tasting, while fondant looks better. Some bakers will do both on the same cake if you ask them.

·        Keep the Weather in Mind

Ingredients such as whipped cream, butterscotch and meringue will melt in hot weather. So if you are having an outdoor wedding in the summer, it may be better to avoid these in your cake. Fondant covered cakes are preferable in the summer as they don’t melt.

·        Top Your Cake

There are a number of ways that you can top of a cake to give it that special finish. These can include floral ribboning, old family air looms etc. You should choose something that is special to you, whilst also fitting in with the theme of the wedding.
